The Filamentor is a custom-designed filament storage and management system built specifically for my Voron 2.4 3D printer. This project was born out of the need for efficient filament organization, precise multi-material handling, and moisture control. The system allows me to print seamlessly with six colors and keep filament dry, ensuring consistent, high-quality prints. It combines mechanical ingenuity with practical design, all housed in a sealed, easy-to-maintain wooden box.

Main Features

01

Multi-Material

At the core of the Filamentor is an integrated ERCF (Multi-Material Unit), enabling the use of six different filament colors in a single print job. This feature drastically expands the creative possibilities and workflow efficiency for multi-material projects.

02

Recoil Mechanism

A unique recoil system ensures that the filament spools are automatically rewound after a filament change. Using a combination of a stepper motor and servos, the system engages the filament gear, allowing the spools to recoil with precision, eliminating waste and preventing tangling.

03

Sliding Shelf Design

The sliding shelf is a key design element, allowing easy access to the components and simplifying filament changes and maintenance. The shelf smoothly pulls out, making it convenient to manage and maintain the system, while a specially engineered mechanism ensures that the filament guide tube re-engages correctly when the shelf is pushed back in.

04

Humidity Control

To keep filaments in optimal condition, the box is airtight and sealed with silicon caulking. Inside, a dehumidifier dry bar and silica packets work together to absorb moisture, preventing filament degradation and ensuring prints remain consistent.

05

Spool Storage

Below the sliding shelf, there is space to store up to six additional filament spools. This convenient storage area ensures that spools are organized, easily accessible, and protected from environmental factors that could affect filament quality.

Filament Path Re-Engagement System

This system uses springs and 3 button head screws to align the moving half of the mechanism mounted on the shelf to the fixed mechanism on the outer box. This achieves perfect alignment of the filament path every time the shelf slides in and out.

Filament Rewind System

This system uses a stepper motor and servos to rewind the filament spools when the multi-material unit changes filament. It works by using the servos to engage the large green gear with the filament spool and the stepper motor.
